Sorry about the poor quality of the image , but this pic was sent to me by a friend who hoped that I might be able to ID it ... but it rings no bells with me ... anyone able to identify it please ?

It could be a spear from the Asmat people, New Guinea.
That was my first thought.

Unfortunately not, the lower part under the spear tip is mostly carved open.
Google will give some examples.

what is the blade made of? Is the picture the point and socket?

To me it looks wood. And it is point and socket to me. Do you have another suggestion?
