Picked up this Yataghan this week. Nice old piece, with a bit of an untidy handle. Nice mark on the blade (any clues?).
It looks like the grip is a type of Horn? Blade is 23" with a 5" handle.
Any ideas on the age of this; I admit I know very little about them!

It's from Bosnia I think, for the handle material we need better pictures but could be rhino horn. Mid 19th century would be my guess but I am not an expert so take my comment with a grain of salt. ;)

Hello Bob,

We need a close-up of the mark!

And for the horn, a top view close-up (of the end of the pommel) would be needed, too!

Kai

The insets and missing insets as well as the shape of the hilt indicate to me Serbia, 19th century.

Hello Jose,
I know this sort of handle inlays from Sarjevo knives, see here: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=16112&highlight=sarajevo

The mark is obscured by rust and lots of grime. If you were to clean it thoroughly (also preferable for long-term preservation), a new pic like this would probably do!

I disagree these inlays are not only from Sarajavo but also very Turkish
look at the guns, long guns and powder flasks...
Could be a Turkish yataghan
