Interesting, the pommel bears some resemblance to the discus pommels on Wute/Baboute archer's swords from Central Cameroon. The blade markings suggest Cameroon as place of origin as well.
Iain is the expert on the subject and I am sure he will comment when he sees this thread.

The brass work on the scabbard resembles that found on Taureg daggers......

Very nice old sword. Perhaps the leather work has been renewed at some point more recently ? (this would be quite a regular thing I guess).

Oddly enough I've been asked to comment on this sword now three times within a week!
Teodor is of course spot on and these were my thoughts exactly. However, I think this is a piece that was done up in a takouba style later on including the guard and the scabbard. This is not surprising when looking at the takouba style influence in the region since the Fulani Jihad.
Frankly I do not think the blade is particularly old, the midrib looks not particularly well formed compared to more sturdy examples I've seen in the past.
The pommel however is quite pretty.
