Weapons from Indian museums.

I found some larger images from Junagarh Fort and Chowmahalla Palace with some unusual looking weapons, I thought I would make a thread as good images from Indian musems are hard to find, most are either very small and or blurry. If anyone has some additional higher resolution images or close up images from Indian Museums, especially unusual weapons please feel free to add them.

Great images, thanks for posting. Not my main area of interest... regarding the short arrows, what are these for... a type of crossbow ?Colin, here is some information on the short Indian arrows from Faganarms, not sure how accurate it is but I have not seen any other references.


One of the remaining mysteries of antique weaponry. Just the third time in 50 years that we have offered these. We have six examples from the same group as those which we recently offered (and sold out immediately!). Construction similar to full length arrows with sinew seated separate nocks. Each about 9" length. Both ends of the shaft with polychrome decoration. Nock ends with evidence of short triple fletching, now lacking as always encountered on Indian arrows.Excellent preservation for the period.

See Pant Vol. 1 page 104 and Plate LXXIV. These were short with an arrow guide, by one account called a marja, held in the bow hand. The small size prevented the enemy from shooting them back with conventional bows. As well, they allowed the archer to carry a larger supply.

I am glad to see these so well kept and well displayed. I have seen and heard horror stories of museum upkeep in India, especially the smaller museums.

Charles, unfortunately you are right about the state of museums in India (and elsewere), even the two that these pictures come from, one has many weapons behind chicken wire, the other has a huge number of weapons so high up on its walls that nobody could possibly get a good look at them. With all of the fabulous weapons in Indian museuma there are not many good, detailed images that can be easily found. I was hoping that forum memebrs would have some additional ones.
