Hello everybody,
I have been busy with life but recently I came across this Barong, Please tell me as much as you can, it is larger and longer than any others I have seen or have in my collection. It has an over all of about 30 inches long! I got this blade for $ owed to me, I am trying to figure out how old and where was it made. Blade is spring steel and ring tone to it and was hand forged. The sheath is wrapped with a flat wire, the sheath was decorated with what looks to be thin sheet aluminum or silver. I was guessing made early 1900s. Please share your thoughts!

Agree with Ariel, WWII or slightly after. Nice, nearly complete piece. :) Similar to one of my collection, see here: http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?t=18910&highlight=barong

didn't the visayans prefer these longer barongs?
my more recent one has a 19.25" (49cm.) blade.

Close ups would be helpful.

Based on what I can see, this is Sulu and yes WWII or post-WWII. The form of the scabbard, the angle of the upturned toe give some of this away. Also the use of all that mother-of-pearl points to the same time period. The style of hilt also point to a later period as well, but the carvings look Sulu.

What is not as common in earlier periods is the size of the blade. This does somewhat remind me of a sipput style of barong blade, which is longer and narrower than what is usually seen.

the false edge/yelman is NOT sharp. it has about a 1mm 'edge'.
the blade itself is scandy ground rather than chisel.
