Hi Max, welcome :)
Your thread title mentions southern Thailand. Is this where you are from? Or do you have photos/information of a Thai keris to share with us?

Yes, he does; I have contacted him via email with the request that he upload the image to the site rather than use a photobucket link . :)

Hi all! I am from Singapore but I am currently working and staying at Bangkok. Since I am in Thailamd, I have taken the opportunity to explore the countries as well as get to know the culture here.
Even though I have been living in SEAsia, I have never really seen a real Keris until now..

WELCOME TO THE FORUM MAX. COLLECTING KERIS SEEMS TO BE ADDICTIVE ONCE STARTED. IT APPEARS YOU HAVE THREE KERIS ALREADY, TWO MALAY KERIS TAJONG ONE MISSING ITS NOSE AND ANOTHER THAT MAY BE BUGIS BUT I AM FAR FROM AN EXPERT SO WILL LEAVE IT UP TO THOSE MORE KNOWLEDGEABLE TO SAY FOR SURE. NICE EXAMPLES AND THE NOSE CAN BE REPLACED EASY ENOUGH AND PERHAPS SOME MEMBER CAN STEER YOU TO A GOOD RESTORER FOR THE JOB. :)

Collecting Keris is really addictive... I hope to focus on the Southern Thai Pattani Keris.. And really hope to find one Coteng......
Anyone knows where can I find one?

Welcome to the forum Max. Yes, addictive indeed! :)
I am afraid that you question about finding a keris coteng can't really be discussed in much detail here as commercial conversation is banned on the forums. After you get through that probational period and are eligible to use the Swap Forum section you could post a "Wanted" request there. I can't point you to specific internet dealers, but they are out there and a Google search for "keris" will no doubt bring up a few hits to explore. Nice old Coteng keris do seem to be a bit scarce though so not every dealer will have one. I do see them from time to time on ePray, though that is a dangerous place for beginner collectors for sure.

Max, i did not pass you post where you state where you sent you keris for restoration. We need to avoid commercial references on the forum.
That said, i do not see the before or after photos attached to this message. If you have them could you upload them to the site. Thanks! :)

Sorry, I thought it will be good to let people know where they could send their Keris for restoration as there are not many around..

That would be advocating for one commercial operation over another. We like to keep the forums commercial free. ;) :)
I find it is actually remarkable just how many keris will stand with just a little coaxing. I'd say at least 85% of my collection will do this without much trouble. :)

Max, just a heads up. You are still on moderated probation like all new members. Your posts therefore need to be cleared by a moderator before they appear on the forum. Please don't keep reposting the same thing. We aren't always on the site, but we will pass your post as soon as possible. :)

it's quite a fascinating phenomenon that some keris can stand on the pointed end whereas the centre of gravity is logically quite far up at the hilt I'd guess.
Any scientific explanation for this anyone?

My guess is that it's well built with good balance

A parlor trick IMO; akin to building a house of cards . ;) :)
Make it stand without the scabbard on a piece of glass and I will be impressed .

I'm not sure a scientific explanation is really necessary. It's just a matter of balance and creating a triangulation of surface contact with the floor/table, blade and sheath. As Rick points out, balancing a keris without the sheath on a hard and impenetrable surface such as glass would be something to be more impressed by. :)

Max, if i might make a suggestion, you are more likely to draw feedback and the thread will be less confusing if you create new thread when you want to get feedback on a new keris.
Also, i believe i mentioned this before, but you are still in moderated status, so your posts do not appear immediately. You don't need to repost the same thing again. you need to give the moderators enough time to see you post in the queue and pass it. Thanks! :)
