Hello everybody,

I bought this dagger, in flea market for a good price,
I don't know if it's real or factice...

it seems to have rests of real gold on blade.
the handle has got three small corals stones.

The seller didn't know much about it, he told me it was from 18th century , maybe ottoman turkish or syrian ...

It find it looks a little like kama daggers.

Any Idea about age , origin ?
Does someone recognize on the pictures if the koftgari (? ) is real and if the handle is made of horn.

Thank you

Francesco

Hello,

not my field of collecting but to my eyes it is a good old kindjal. The handle is certainly from horn. All other comments I let for the experts in this field.

The scabbard seems to be too fancy. It is not traditional Caucasian scabbard for sure. Probably the later replacement.

For the hilt - seems to be quite good for early XIX century kindjals. The blade is strange - for koftgari, shape etc.

To my mind it could be (not for sure!) the Arabian imitation of Caucasian kindjal made after 1860th somewhere in Ottoman Empire in the best case.

Hello,

thank you both for your message and informations.

Can't it be an ( copy of ?) ottoman court dagger, common in Turkey in 18th-19th century ?

An idea about the price of such a model ?

I paid it approximately 200 $ and wonder if it was a good, normal or bad business for me...

Thank you

Francesco

This is Ottoman work from the Black Sea region and was called "kama" in Turkish, or simply, "hancer." It's not a superior example but very good and complete nonetheless. Dates 1800 c.e. - 1850 c.e. Note that the scabbard lacks anything more than a simple loop to secure it-- it was thrust into the silahluk along with pistols and accoutrements, beside or in place of, a yatagan.
