Looks to be Middle Eastern/African in origin, and shows good age. The hilt is horn or bone with a nicely tooled cuff stitched on. The scabbard is solid leather, and tidily hand stitched. Pommel cap and quillon/guard are brass and nicely decorated. The blade is of quality steel and sharp, as is the yelman.
Any ideas as to origin?

Taking a guess here, I would start in the vicinity of Afghanistan. In the last 10 years, I have visited with a few folks that had toured there and they came back with quite a few edged weapons and often times, they seemed composite pieces like this one. Probably an older blade and cross guard that have been fitted with this handle and scabbard.

Thanks Rick, although the age seems constant throughout the piece. Not that it proves anything by itself. If it is a combination, then everything seems to fit together well, unlike many of that type which obviously do not.
Hopefully more replies will expand on your thoughts.

Taking a wild stab in the dark, modified European hunting sword? I really have no clue. :)

I'm with Rick on this one...parts of a primitive tulwar reworked into its present state. It seems well-fitted, but many of them were. Afghan is an excellent guess. The toe piece on the scabbard like many of the Berber sheaths we've seen- Iain, I was originally leaning towards parts from a European hanger, but those langets are definitely tulwar-ish ( :D )
