Hello forumites.
Can someone help me with indentifying the origin of this badek knife ?
I would also like to know what style ferrule it once had.
Best regards,
Willem

The hilt looks like Banjarese hilts ( south Borneo ) maybe an exported piece from Sumatra. I would give the thing a brass ferrule.

Hello Detlef,
The general shap is similar, but the elaborate carvings an decorations on your example make me think more of Sumatra.

Hello Arjan,
Banjarmasin was also my feeling with this hilt.
I checked the RMV collection, but could not find anything similar. (yet)
Maybe other forumites have similar examples ? :)

Rare perhaps, but not unique... ;)
Interesting theory that these could be Banjar...plausible at any rate. I figured Bugis of some description but god knows from where. Got mine quite a long time back on Ebay from a European source. Probably the usual tourist bring-back story so the provenance is totally irretrevable.
BTW, the hilt collar and buntut on mine are buffalo horn if you're considering restoring yours.
33.5cm OAL, 21.5cm blade.

Thank you for posting this rare dagger :) Nice example with the horn details.
I will first try to restore it with metal, but horn will be the next possibility.

:D :D
The Buffalo horn band looks fine on your example.
I like to restore things whenever they are missing, but I prefer when pieces are complete and preferrably original.
I am not unsatisfied with the result on this badek either, but I could improve the quality of my pictures. ;)
Artificial light is really not my thing. daylight gives so much better pictures.

Willem

I took some daylight pictures to do the handle and the blade more justice :)
