This one was given to me by a friend. It was dug up in his garden in Aalborg/Denmark. It was found approx 70 cm in the ground.
Size is 11,5 cm/ 2254 grams.
any thoughts on what it might be ?
Thanks
HB

It is truly amazing to see what astounding information can be found with the search feature here! Over these years many informative discussions have brought together a great corpus of data in comprehensive coverage, often adding new and little known material.

That's some great info Michael.

Unfortunately it seems like my ball is not a cannonball :(
The two cirkles is excactly opposite each other and there is no filler hole sprue. Besides that mine is hollow.
I have posted this on a danish site too, and noone can confirm this as a cannonball.

Hi HB,
No wind mills in the area where your ball was found ?
... or prisons ? ;)

Now you've had the serious replies...

It's a dead ringer for Mimas, one of the moons of Saturn.

Another great link ! Thanks !

Took another look at it yesterday. It seems like the dot in the circle has got a thread. So maybe it has been hanging from a hook/eye or something that has been screwed in the ball.
It is most probably a counterweight of some kind. We didn't use those kind of windmills in Denmark, but it could have been used as a counterweight in another kind of industry maschine.

as we just finished the olympics and are about to start the paralympics, the following comes to mind ;)

2.5 kg throwing hammer/weight minus it's broken off handle? (some of these are hollow / lead shot filled.)

On a similar theme , I have had this odd item in my possession for 20 years .. it was dug up on a local farm and described to me as a cannonball by the finder. Whilst I doubt it's a projectile , I was hoping someone might recognise what it is . It has a diameter of 80 mm and weighs an astonishing 2.4 kg . It appears to be made of bronze but is hollow and filled with lead .
