Not sure it's really old because of the width of the blade near the hilt. and the way the "clip" is made, etc.

Nice gunong, but i suspect it is much more contemporary than you think it is.

Hello Lew,

have you asked the seller about the age? I am nearly sure that you will get an open answer.
Pictures for later reference.

Detlef

As far as I can tell there is enough patina on the wood and the silver work does exhibit a higher quality workmanship. Compared to some of the other examples the seller has had up for auction. This piece could be WW2 vintage . Plus with the asking prices of gunongs of late I actually made him an offer for $35 less than his asking price. So if it turns out to be more recent than it will be a lesson learned but at least it won't be too hard to swallow :)

Looks like it could be a newer, but the workmanship looks excellent making it a worthy addition to a collection regardless of age.

From handling modern-made gunongs in Davao, I know the craftsmen of Lanao Del Sur are still very capable of making excellent gunongs: the price on this one was definitely fair.

yup, aldevinco in Davao had a lot of these a few years back. harimauhk, you're right in that the craftsmen of lanao del sur, specifically tugaya, are more than capable of making these, even to the point of making them look old.

I saw some really first rate modern gunongs at Aldevinco, but I wasn't prepared to pay their prices and they wouldn't accept my offers. I'll make it to Lanao Del Sur eventually. ;)

The gunong arrived today and it is quite well made the bunti wood is nicely figured. The blade exhibits the proper distal taper. The back of the guard has a quality engraving. :) maybe recent but worth what I paid ;) .

Lew,
This is a very nice looking piece regardless of age. It looks to be very well made and I would be quite happy to have one like it. My congratulations.
