here is a small sword , seems to be a hirschfanger, but
-there are no hunting scenes depicted,
-there is a nobleman depicted, surrounded by dancing characters (on the ivory grip)
-there is a coat of arms shield with helmet above, at the end of the grip
-the blade is identical to dress swords and engraved in 18 th century style including a crowned character

what do you think?

And quite an early Hirschfänger as well, the etching on the blade is 17th c., the finely carved bone (or ivory?) grip is shaped as an otter's head.

Not my range of expertise but an extremely nice item in perfect condition.

Best,
Michael

Hi,

this is a very nice Dutch hunting hanger, a carved stylish lions head made in Ceylon.

these hangers are made in the end of the 17thC till mid 18thC.
yours has a Dutch smallsword blade and can be dated in the second quarter of the 18thC.
see similar examples from the visser collection.

Best,
Jasper
