Greeting all. New member here.
I thought I would start my membership by posting photos of my patisthanaya.
I have owned this patisthanaya for about 30 years, but I have only a vauge idea when a weapon like this might have been made. Possible age info would be appreciated.

WELCOME TO THE FORUM :)
FROM WHAT I HAVE READ THESE SPEARS WERE USED IN CEYLON (SIRI LANKA) AND THE MALDIVE ISLANDS FOR SPEAR FIGHTING BOUTS AND TOURNIMENTS. I DON'T KNOW WHAT THE RULES WERE FOR THESE FIGHTS BUT THIS TYPE OF SPEAR TIP IS NOT DESIGNED TO PENETRATE DEEPLY SO WOULD NOT BE A VERY GOOD DESIGN FOR A WAR SPEAR.
YOUR EXAMPLE MAY NOT BE ONE OF THESE TOURNAMENT SPEARS IF THE BLADE IS LARGE THE POINTS ON THESE ARE USUALLY ONLY 3 TO 4 INCHES LONG. THE PAINT ON THE SHAFT IS WHAT MAKES ME GUESS CEYLON, MALDIVES OR INDIA. THERE ARE EUROPEAN EXAMPLES BUT NONE I KNOW OF WITH THE SMALL POINTS OR FULLY PAINTED SHAFTS.
WHAT LITTLE I KNOW OF THIS I READ IN THE OLD PALACE OF THE RULER OF THE MALDIVES , I SAW SOME EXAMPLES THERE. HE WAS A BIG FAN OF THIS SORT OF SPEAR FIGHTING WHICH REQUIRED A LOT OF SKILL AND ACCURACY. HIS OLD PALACE IS NOW A MUSEUM WORTH A VISIT IF YOU EVER PASS THRU. THE PAINTED DESIGNS ON THE ENTIRE SHAFT IS THE USUAL FOR THE ABOVE MENTIONED AREAS. PICTURES ARE A BIT SMALL FOR OLD EYES TO SEE WELL, LOOKS LIKE A NICE EXAMPLE.

VANDOO,
Thank you for you response and information.
Sorry about the photo sizes. They were much bigger, but they might have been too big so the forum software may have resized them.

Mike, welcome to the forum. We have no software on this forum that automatically resizes photos so the size you sent them is the size they appear. If you size your photo to about 6x10 inches @ 72 ppi they should be a good size for the forum.

I GOOGLED AROUND SEARCHING MALDIVE ISLANDS TO SEE IF I COULD PIN DOWN A POSSIBLE DATE OR SULTAN WHO ENJOYED MARTIAL ARTS AND ESPECIALLY SPEAR FIGHTING TOURINAMENTS. NO LUCK :(
BUT THE RULE OF THE SULTANS ENDED IN 1932 SO THESE SPEARS MAY DATE BEFORE THEN UNLESS THEY ARE STILL BEING MADE. ALL OF THEM I HAVE SEEN HAVE BEEN OLD NOT NEW. THE SULTANS OLD PALACE IS NOW THE NATIONAL MUSEUM IT IS LOCATED ON MALE ISLAND WHICH IS THE LARGEST CITY. THE MALDIVES ARE NOTED FOR THEIR BEACHES AND GOOD SCUBA DIVING.
I HAVE ADDED SOME PICTURES OF SPEAR HEADS. THIS FORM HAS A SOCKET WITH TWO LONG STRAPS TO SECURE IT TO THE SHAFT AND HELP PROTECT AND REINFORCE THE SHAFT.
