Just wonderin'... are there a lot of fake yataghans out there? And how can one tell a real yat from a fake one? Any tell tale signs??

Well (bring a deep subject :D ) there are some reproductions made. They are not of the same quality or detail in the hilt and filigree as real ones (as of yet  ).

Sounds like you are broadening your collecting field! :D

Thx jose! But would repros go to the length of having gold koftgari, ivory pommel, and silver scabbard?

No. They would be normally too expensive and a repo is for cheap manufacture and quick sale. (You can email me if you want).

I am not aware of any blatantly fake yataghans, with the exception of chinese monstrosities not even resembling the original blade contour and with fantasy handles.
Jose, if you have any examples, could you post them? I would be very interested to look at them ( BTW, sorry for having missed you in Louisville, but you were doing a good deed, so all is forgiven).
And, as for the ivory/ gold/ koftgari.... I am with Jose 100%.

Fortunately they are difficult to reproduce well right now. Only yataghan bayonets are being reproduced at present. Below are 2 that are recent custom reproductions:

Below is a Vince Evans reproduction and although the best I have seen so far, you can still see that it is modern.

You can find the thread here: www.myarmoury.com/talk/viewtopic.php?p=94571

Well, that's reassuring. I'm eyeing a kindjal at the moment, and by doing a research in this forum, i was surprise at how rampant are the forgeries on these swords. Somehow, i was thinking about yataghans, and nothing is mentioned about these swords being faked... thanks!

Kindjals seem to be more easily faked. Yats are little harder to fake and so far not worth it. Perhaps not enough interest in them to fake.

either recycling old blades and added gold/ koftgari, with new hilt and without scabbard
or India new wootz blade with also gold/ koftgari, with scabbard

Good point Dom. I have been confused by these and what you said makes sense.
