I'm guessing the Japanese component quasi-qualifies this to list in the ethnographic forum...
I am hoping someone here can shed light on this auction that recently ended on the 'bay. In particular, I am curious as to whether anyone might be able to explain why what I see as a Gerponese Frankendagger fetched a hammer price well over $500.
$565 for what looks to me to be a one-off comprised of an SA blade married to a Meiji period colonial Japanese hilt. So why the stratospheric price? Is it a particularly rare RZM code? Am I missing something here?

And does this mean there's an SA-hilted Japanese colonial sword floating out there somewhere?

Maybe it's me but unless the RZM number has some significance, it is not that rare a blade and belongs to an SA (as you mentioned earlier) and the hilt a WWII Japanese (or a 1930's) hilt.
Who would do such a thing to these pieces anyway?

In the terms of the period it represents, would AXIS DAGGER fit?

I know zilch about this sort of cutting tool, but I can recognise a real good used car salesman when I see him in action.

I guess if it had an Italian scabbard, then it would be an AXIS DAGGER.

Gerponese Frankendagger
I just saw the photo's
Someone please shoot the man who created that monstrosity!
Shoot him, cut out his tongue and shoot his tongue! That's like using a backyard welder to fuse a edo period tanto blade with a lord of the rings dagger hilt, or something equally blasphemous!

I have to believe that had to be Dr. Frankendagger's motive... it's aliiiiiiive!
As much as I love a good dose of cross-cultural reuse on an antique edged weapon - a European bladed katar, for example - this bastard blade just, just... I don't know. Creative, sure... but I guess I didn't know SA daggers were so expendable?
Maybe this is the only way you the seller was able to get around the We're-denying-Nazi-Germany-ever-existed policy on feepay-epray?
Anyway, if you'll excuse me, I have to go spot weld a Yemeni jambiya blade onto a Victorian basketweave dirk hilt...

I don't know guys... I think we might have pre-judged the "creator" of this unholy marriage. I heard a noise back in the spare bedroom... went to investigate, turned on the light, and what did I find?
