Who can help me with more info on this Sumatran Sewar. It is quite old (would say 19th century, maybe first half of it?) well carved horn upper part of the scabbard. Handle in wood with carved crown and silver overlay.

I have the following questions:

1 Is this a Tumbok Lada or a Sewar. (blade is about 27 cm and 1 cm thick at the base).

2 I know about crowns on rencong but know only one sewar with crowns. The wooden handle has carved "crown" on which silver is added. Is this also a matter of tribal hierarchy like with rencong crowns?

3 What is the region? Based on my experience with a few panjang kerisses I would say North Sumatra - probably Aceh.

Would like to hear your opinions on this.

Regards, Erik

Hello Erik,

I would call it Sewar, look for this inside the book from van Zonneveld. The blade of a Tumbok Lada is broader. I have also one with a crown at the handle and I think that these examples for higher ranking people. About the origin I can't say something. Here examples from my collection for comparison.

Hi Erik and Detlef,

The pieces you have with crown are wonderfull pieces to look at.
I like those little daggers a lot!
I have had one but it is now in another forummember's collection and I'm sure he doesn't mind when posting an image of it.
It has also a crown, but it is not a silver one, but a crown carved in the horn.

Hi Maurice,

yes I also have a soft spot for this small daggers. The one you show is very nice with the inserted silver eyes.
