I recently acquired a Meiji era painting depicting a Japanese man carrying what I take to be a weapon in the naginata family. I am not aware of any japanese weapon with the extra 'hook' although it is found on the Chinese Guan Dao, which this resembles. Anyone know of any specific Japanese weapon that looks like this. The painting dates to about 1905. I am pretty sure it is a military reference due to the traditional standards seen in the background.

Do a search on "bisento." It's the Japanese version of the Guan dao.
