Hi Berberdagger,
sorry can't help with the marking, although I've taken the liberty to try and make the mark a little clearer. Could you post pictures of the entire Rapier ? Thanks

Regards David

I very much agree with David, it is important to post an entire weapon rather than simply an inscription or marking as the context is typically important to recognizing origins. Just looking at a 'lion' on a blade might bring the temptation of suggesting the 'Lion of Judah' often seen on Abyssinian/Ethiopian blades.
A winged lion would suggest the marking from Venice, and more in place on a rapier, especially of classical form. Also I am puzzled, it is noted the mark is in a knife, but the title and illustration mention rapier.

All best regards,
Jim

Indeed such a perfect lion for a XVII century mark  .
I too would love to see that rapier
