They're in the wrong place Sajen:- those hilts belong in my cabinet, not yours.

Hi Sajen,
very interesting collection.
Could you show us the third hulu, front row. It looks really peculiar.
Congratulations

Michel :)

Thank you Detlef,
Now that I have seen it, it does not look as peculiar as I initially thought.
In your first picture, I saw a bird with a double beak. I had never seen a double beak with long upper mandible divided in two. Now it is clear it is just a long, very long beak.
Do you think it was made for a keris ? or was it just sculpted as an artistic expression ?
Have you been able to assemble you very nice collection just in Germany or have you had to travel in Indonesia to assemble it ?
Thanks for sharing
Regards
Michel

Hello Michel,

this type of hilts are from Lampung, Sumatra. Many of my hilts, also this one, I have collected in Indonesia. I don't know exactly if this is an old one but you can see at the hole for the pesi that it have been on a keris one time. When you have the book from Martin Kerner "Keris-Griffe aus Museen und Privatsammlungen" look at page 128, there is a very similar hilt. Also in the third book from Tammens "De Kris 3" on page 183, picture 166 is a similar hilt. The one Rick want to see is also a Lampung hilt.

Detlef

Here a Lampung hilt from horn either original set together from two pieces or an old repair. This is for sure an antique hilt, also collected in Indonesia.

And here another wooden example from the same region which lost his beak long time ago. The finest carving from all.

And here a recent example (I bought it 1994 in Idonesia) but a masterpiece of carving. Note, the ring under the beak is movable and the complete hulu is from one piece of wood. Unfotunately is this hilt fallen down one time and the beak was broken, it's reglued.

I've got a few more Lampung ones but they're not ready to photograph. If I ever get them cleaned up and repaired I'll post pics of them.

Good hilt Marco, is it a recent one? And you like to show us your other ones?

Yeah, patina is fine---as long as it doesn't include rotten decayed old shellac that picks up dust and fills all the carving detail. I've got some metal (silver?) ones too, a couple of which need careful repair.

Another hilt from the table, a small sea ivory hilt. Does someone know from where this hilt? Is it maybe a hilt from Sijunjung?

Sorry, I am out of order for other work because I have got a Arthroskopie at my right knee, so I am sitting and clean my handles and so coming some question in my head.
What do you think, is this Jawa Deman from Cirebon or Sumatra? My guess it is a Cirebon hilt.

Hello Detlef,
Tammens says Indragiri (Riau) for these hilts, those from Sijunjung have a similar pointed beak but are shorter

Hello Detlef,
I also believe that it originates from Cirebon because of the stylized arms and slim waist.
