In the section 'Etnographic Weapons', I showed two Indonesian knives.

Here is the keris which belonged to the lot. I think it's from Sumatra, as are the two knives.

I won't say much about the keris. Please give you opinion.

There is some damage to the piece. The nose of the handle was lost at some time, but the damage is old.

Also the sheath was (badly ?) repaired, but seems to be the original one.

Hi Freddy,

yes, an old Palembang keris. A heavy used example. How fit the blade inside the sheat? It seems all original to my eyes. When I am you I will clean the blade and give it a warangan and let the sheat and hilt like this.

Yep, i agree, Palembang from Sumatra. This looks to me to be a very well formed and graceful blade and i agree that it deserves a good cleaning and re-staining. If the sheath is a good fit i would try to restore it. As for the hilt, there is no restoring that unfortunately. I would shop around for the same style hilt, there are a lot of them out there. :)

This is the other choice. But sometimes I like to keep a keris like this when it shows it's age and usage special when it have such a nice patination. But this is a personal taste.

Nice old keris, Freddy.

Palembang as the others say, seems very right.
More or less an out of the book example

I would keep it more or less as it is.
Maybe clean the farnisch of the scabbard and put on some wax.
The handle. shame about the nose, but as detlef says, it shows its age and with such a patina I would not replace it.

The blade. I don't like sumatra blades that are stained the javanese way.
would suggest to clean it gently and put on some oil to preserve it.
Very nice blade , gracefull.

Nice buy

Sorry Willem,

I think that special Palembang blades need a staining, the result can be very good. And I am nearly sure that this blade will show a nice pamor. All my Palembang blades have a very nice pamor. Here some examples. Sorry about the poor pics.
