View Full Version : ARE THESE ALL SANGKITS ?

Greetings

These have been in my collection since the mid eighties. Three were puchased from an English auction house and the curved one with the white bone hilt came from a private collecter.

I think the 3 wooden hilted ones are Sangkit, but as you can see the blades are slightly different although all are a similar size.

Only one has a wooden scabbard although another has the remains of a similar one.

The bone hilted one has a similar hilt form and the round ferrule, but the blade is more like a Langgai Tinggan in shape.

As usual, your comments would be appreciated.

Hello Royston,

If you will have a close look again you will notice that the bone hilt differs from the wooden handles. The bone hilt is the hilt that was used for the latoks.
But the ferrule shows similarities with the wooden handles of your sangkits.
The blade is the blade used for a so called parang pedang.

A similar one was discussed in the following thread:

By the way, all nice swords!
I still need to get one yet ....:p

Sajen,

Thanks for the compliments

Maurice ,

Thanks for the comments and links.

I should have looked more carefully at the style of hilt. You are correct it does resemble the latok hilt.

The links are interesting but there is still no name for this type that I can see.

Royston,

Sorry if my comment was confusing in the old thread.
I later bought that parang, so I have handled it, and it is a Parang Pedang.
But there seems to be tribal variations of the Parang Pedang, as among other popular Borneo parang,
and yours is clearly a Murut version.
Very nice collection of rare Murut swords btw.

Here's another karit ilang, aka Sangkit, for reference purposes. Another thread showing these blades is here (http://www.vikingsword.com/vb/showthread.php?p=231418#post231418).
