hello all,
I have a new toy which i think maybe a Pesh Kabz.I know very little of these weapons and am hoping someone can shed some light on what is in my opinion a well crafted object. The overall lenght is 11" and the blade is razor sharp. The grips appear to be horn. There is a hanging ornament at the rear of the handle. The painted colour seems to have applied in "childlike" manner, not at all in keeping with the rest of the weapon. Thanks Andy

Hello Rick
My knife is very similar to the choora. I have sent a picture to Lee, see what you think! They seem very highly crafted. Thanks for your help.

Hi Andy,
A lot of chooras are painted with bright colors - red, purple, yellow, etc. I've seen a few in antique shops and there have been a few on eBay in the last few months.
Regards,
-d

Not an expert but my guess is an early 20 century choora, blade cannot be seen but sometimes they are gold decorated and also made out of wootz.

Yep, blade, sheath, and handle; that's a choora. Commonly on chooras the pommel-hook has seperate scales from the grip, with the fibers running crosswise to it; I can't tell from the photo if yours shows that or not. It's not definitional or anything; I just wonder? Sometimes certain ivories (can't dang remember which) get that orange colour with age; could the hilt be ivory rather than horn?

Giraffe horn? Didn't I read on these pages a while back that giraffe horn takes on that orange color?

Never mind. I was thinking of this thread: http://www.vikingsword.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/001427.html

Ian suggested sea cow (dugong)ivory. Very similar color.

Hello Tom,
The hook and grips are made of sepearate pieces of what could well be ivory. Is there any signifcance to the hanging decorative bells on the pommel, and were these weapons worn for "dress" like the jambiya?

Not only they are for dress but the blade is designed for armour or chain-mail piercing.
