Mediæval Sword Sources

Peter Dale, Ltd. in England is, I believe, the oldest specialized antique arms and armour shop in greater London and is presently managed by Robin Dale, the son of the founder. While the stock most often represents European arms and armour of the 16th through 19th Centuries, an occasional medieval sword will creep into the inventory, and the firm may also be retained to do commission bidding and or evaluations of items coming up in the London salesrooms. Located behind Her Majesty's Theatre (I presume Phantom of the Opera is still playing there) on Haymarket, south of Picadilly Circus, at 12 Royal Opera Arcade; Pall Mall, London, SW1Y 4UY, England. The telephone (020) 7930 3695 (from the USA dial 011 44 020 7930 3695) serves as an answering machine and fax outside of regular store hours; it is wise to call ahead to verify opening days and hours.

Ken Drake deals in antique arms and armor of all times and cultures and occasionally will have medieval swords for sale. He may be expected to have a table at the Baltimore Antique Arms Show as well as at a few other "better" grade national and regional shows. As he lives on Long Island, he is likely to be aware of what is coming up for sale in the New York City salesrooms and he is known to undertake commission bidding for his clients at the NYC auctions. He may be contacted by mail at P.O. Box 972; Amityville, NY 11701 or by phone at (516) 799-4694.

Peter Finer is a dealer in top-end antique arms and armor and in rare arms & armor books located in Warwickshire, England. Besides his fabulous reference-quality full color printed catalog which most recently included two medieval swords, one with a crystal pommel and the other with a jasper pommel (already sold, I understand), he has an electronic catalog on his web site which presently (June 1998) includes two excavated medieval swords. Mr. Finer exhibits at the top general antiques fairs in New York City (the International in October and the Winter Antiques Show held in January) as well as in Dallas, Palm Beach and Maastricht. If you prefer to make contact other than by the hyperlink to his web site, he may be contacted by mail at The Old Rectory; Ilmington; Shipston-on-Stour; Warwickshire CV36 4JQ; England or by phone at 01608 682267 (from the US dial 011 44 1608 682267 or use his US fax/answering machine at (800) 270-7951).

David Petty deals in a wide range of fine antique arms and armor. I would expect that he would routinely have several medieval swords on offer (or know where to find them). He may be expected to have a table at both the Park Lane Arms Fair and the Baltimore Antique Arms Show and has also exhibited at the semiannual London Arms Fairs and some of the "better" grade U.S. shows. What you want may not be on top of his table, so you should not be timid about asking, as even if he does not have any medieval swords along, he may have photographs of some that are available). He may be contacted by phone at 01628 605519 (from the US dial 011 44 1628 605519).

Terence Porter offers a selection of fine antique arms, armour & works of art. His web site features a regularly updated and well illustrated on-line catalogue featuring mostly European arms and armour. Several Scottish basket-hilted swords, a Venetian schiavona and a fabulous gold and silver decorated Spanish renaissance mace were depicted at the time of this writing (June, 1998). Medieval swords may occasionally be available. Mr. Porter will also advise and represent clients concerning purchases in the auction sales rooms. He may be contacted by e-mail at thporter.antiques@btinternet.com, mail at PO Box 59028; Dallas, Texas 75229-0028, telephone at (972) 681 4639 and by fax at (972) 681 8992.

David Oliver, who organizes the annual Park Lane Arms Fair held in London will often know both of medieval swords on the market or likely to become available as well as who may be looking to buy such swords. He may be contacted by mail at Pennystane; Church Lane; Thropton nr. Morpeth; Northumberland NE65 7JB; UNITED KINGDOM; or by telephone at 01669 620618 (from the US dial 011 44 1669 620618.)
