1151 - African Iron Spearhead / Javelin Head

This iron spearhead is 10 inches (25.4 cm) in overall length with a leaf-shaped blade expanding quickly to its maximum width just beyond a 'stem' with repeated hatch marks on its corners. A curved indentation marks the external termination of the tapering 0.36 inch (0.9 cm) maximum inside diameter socket. The socket depth probes to 1 7/8 inches (4.6 cm) and there appears to be old dried material lining the walls of the socket. The darkly patinated blade shows a low central rib with numerous shaping marks and the edges curve slightly in opposite directions. The weight is 4 ounces (113 grams). The origin within Africa is uncertain, but features suggest the possibility of Central Africa as likely.
