1109 - Balinese Naga (Serpent) Keris with Layered Blade

The 5 luk (wave) serpentine blade is formed of layered contrasting steels, the brighter areas likely with nickel content, giving a somewhat random pamor (grain pattern) arising from irregular layers lying relatively parallel to the plane of the blade. Carving at the base of the blade takes the form of the head of a crowned naga or serpent that abruptly turns back with the scaled body following the rounded mid rib up to a tail nearly at the tip. Including the ganja (cross piece at the base of the blade) the blade is 16½ inches (42 cm) in length. The mendak (transition collar between hilt and blade) is composed of yellow metal, likely brass, with inconspicuous losses towards the blade. The simply carved wooden hilt is faceted upon the sides and back of the grip and smoothly rounded on the forward side. Overall length is 22 inches (56 cm) with a weight of 19½ ounces (558 grams).
