An old tag (see image at bottom) identifies this artifact as a buckler (or small hand shield) of the Batammaliba Tribe occupying areas of present day Benin, Togo and Burkina Faso. Originally reputedly intended as a defense against arrows, these shields are presently retained for war dances and other ceremonies. The body of the shield and the central projection are composed of spirally wound canes wrapped with rattan fibers and a leather hand grip has been attached. The diameter of the disc is just under 10 inches (25.4 cm) with the raised spike rising about 3½ inches (8.8 cm); the weight is 9 1/3 ounces (265 grams).
