227 - Large Saudi (Arabian) Jambiya with Brass Trimmed Hilt, Early 20th Century

This long curved double-edged dagger is typical of those from Hijaz and Asir (modern day Saudi Arabia). The hilt has a core of wood covered with iron overlain almost completely with brass on the display face and only continuing around to the back as a band around the central grip. A degree of rubbing (old abrasive wear) may be seen on the brass. A narrow triangular well executed engraved panel is present on each blade face. The blade measures 17¾ inches and has several patches of mild to focally moderate pitting from previous rust. Overall length is about 23 inches with a weight of just under 18 ounces.

Lew's notes indicated that this dagger had a sheath and a fairly decrepit old sheath with a belt in somewhat better condition was present in the odd bits and pieces that appears to have once fitted the dagger. Using that sheath is a hazardous operation today as the wood core and covering leather have split and the edge protrudes as the dagger is inserted in the sheath. Gentle pressure did appear to reform the scabbard so that the blade could fit, but I declined to test that to the hilt. The sheath and belt weigh just under 14½ ounces.
