148 - African Congo Large Spear, late 19th to early 20th Century

Made from age-darkened iron and wood, this spear from the African Congo was dated by Lew as circa 1890 to 1900. The iron spearhead is 32¼ inches (82 cm) long with the leaf shaped blade measuring just under 21 inches (53 cm) of that length. Two rows of 5 perforations each lie in a mildly concave face and are parallel to a central low midrib. A shallow slot is present on the shaft of circular diameter just beyond the transition from the blade. The shaft is wrapped with an iron band that is very slightly loose in places before the shaft widens into a carved wooden grip before again narrowing back into another segment with a spirally wrapped iron band. Following a short length of exposed wood is a chisel shaped iron butt with three raised ribs on each face. The spearhead does not appear fully inserted onto the shaft and a small amount of material appears to have been inserted to secure it. Overall length is 66¾ inches (169.6 cm) with a weight of 40 ounces (1159 grams).
